So...... you know how you do something and you know it's not the safest way to proceed but you do it anyway...

Yea, do not use your largest knife (even though it might be your favorite knife) to remove the seed from an avocado.

Why???? you may ask. Well I'll tell you... Apparently your fingers are as easily slice-able as said avocado.

So, last night I'm puttzing around the house, checking the my e-mail, and various websites and such, wash some dishes. It's Tuesday, wife's at class, I was thinking about re-potting a plant. You know the usual. Well I get this great idea to make a sandwich one I was very excited about. Pita, humus, red onion, lettuce, tomatoes, shredded carrots, and avocado. Sounds great right? So I pull out all the ingredients and start slicing and I have some music going and all is good... until I get to the avocado. Well my very large knife can cut straight through the seed and so i cut it in half. Take the seed out of the first half, and proceed to the second half. Well this half is a little smaller, so I stick the point of my knife into the seed, and lo and behold it doesn't stop at the seed. My knife goes through the seed and the rest of the avocado, and continues through the side of my finger. While you digest that, here is my reaction, in my head "Oh shit that can't be good,better get to the sink before I blood starts squirting, don't want to ruin a perfectly good chopping board". This thought tool all of 5 seconds and was rather jumbled. I rush to the sink, as blood is making it's way rather quickly down my arms, but I remain calm, keeping my arm elevated and trying to figure out how to stop the bleeding, all the while chanting "oh shit, oh shit, oh my god, oh shit, oh shit". Finally get a paper towel around it and apply some pressure. As I am doing this I can see the inside of my finger, which is kind of hard to explain although every thing was just red, white and pink, I don't believe were are supposed to see he inside of our bodies, with out proper preparation. So, Next step getting my jeans on finding some money, and calling a cab. Cab comes I say take me to the hospital.

cabbie - Are you ok?
Me - Yea, just sliced my finger with a knife
Cabbie - were you cooking?
Me - making a sandwich?
Cabbie - did you get to eat it?
Me - No
Cabbie - I would have eaten the sandwich.

So we get to the hospital, cabbie was actually cool, he also had a similar incident. Luckily the ER wasn't busy.. I get called in, the nurse takes blood pressure and such things, she cleans all the dried blood off. I go back to waiting room, about 5 minutes later I'm called back in and taken to a room. The orderly ask what happened I tell him, he just shakes his head, asks if I have ever had stitches, my answer, "not while I was awake". The doctor comes in next takes a look asks if I have ever had stitches and i give him the same answer. So he starts prepping, as he looks at the cut and while doing what he has to do, every few minutes he says "Hey you really did a good job here", or "wow, your really lucky". But he's done in like five minutes, says he's going to prescribe some antibiotics, not because he really thinks there might be a chance of infection, nope, just on the fact at how deep the wound is. Yup there I go again trying to over achieve. So after I gets sewed up and gets a tetanus (sp) shot I'm good to go. So I leave the hospital walk to the bus stop stand in the pouring rain for ten minutes, get on the bus and go home. A few things to note: yes, I did call my wife when I got to the ER. I left her a very calm matter-of-fact message, which ended in I'll probably be home by the time you get this. also even though I had cash for the cab, I left my wallet at home, and therefore could not g get my prescription.

So I come home get out of wet clothes, and proceed to the kitchen. Rinse out the sink the only place there was any blood, throw away the half of the avocado still on the knife. I note that fortunately the cat did not disturb anything on the cutting board... so I slice up what's left of my avocado, gingerly shred my carrot and make my sandwich. There was enough fixings for three pita halves and I ate it all.

I ended up with six stitches in my middle left finger, it is very swollen and the side the cut is on is completely numb. I don't now how much feeling if any I will get back, but at least I didn't hit any tendons. The wife and I figure I cut just shy of both tendons in the finger.

yeah, I could totally live here.... first of all the weather is awsome, were supposed to get some showers today and tommorw, but I don't care. It's only day two, (well actually day three, we arrived about 6:30 pm on sunday, but were to tired to really do much.) and we have been a few places. Went to the beach yesterday, it's just across the street from the hotel. Water was amazing warm and clear. Did alot of walking around. We plan to go snorkeling and maybe a hike as well.

I really need to get a hair cut tho... forgot to do it before we left. anyhoo, need coffee since it's only eight in the morning here. Oh anf by the way, the have a store here called "ABC Store".... there are more of these in Waikiki, then there are Dukin Dounuts in the state of Mass. Seriously, you can't walk past one with out seeing another half a block away. But the do sell just about everything youwould need while on vacation and if your not.
